James Howard is originally from Spring Hill, TN. He received his B.S. degree in chemistry at the University of Alabama. As an undergraduate, he worked with Professor Kevin Shaughnessy to develop air-stable palladium precatalysts for Suzuki coupling reactions. He received his Ph.D. under the supervision of Professor Eric V. Anslyn at the University of Texas at Austin. His graduate work focused on the design and optimization of multicomponent assemblies as ee determination assays for chiral amines. His contributions specifically focused on applying descriptor-based machine learning (ML) modeling to predict calibration curves for these assays. Following his graduate studies, James worked with Professor Matthew Sigman at the University of Utah. James was awarded the NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein Postdoctoral Fellowship to support his work on data-driven biocatalytic optimization. He continues his work at the University of Louisville as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry.
